Our congregation offers many opportunities for women to come together to worship and serve God.
WELCA (Women of the ELCA)President: Carol Rikhus Treasurer: Lynn Sanborn
The women of Eksjo perform many important tasks in the church. We serve dinners for funerals, weddings and important events in our church year. We provide educational speakers and Bible studies for all women during the year. We also donate to many worthwhile charities. We invite you to participate in our activities. WELCA meets periodically throughout the year, and sponsors special events. Please watch the bulletin and newsletter for our event and meeting information.
WELCA is divided into three service work groups. All the women are assigned to a group, which are listed in the WELCA book. As a member of a work group you will be called upon to contribute food and/or work for events. The groups rotate so no one is called upon too often. For the large events several or all of the groups work together. We want you to know how important your help is. We are a small group and every hand helps keep us going. Working together can also be a rewarding way of getting to know others better. We also ask for volunteers to serve coffee on Sunday morning.
Bible Studies - We encourage you to join one of our women’s bible studies....
Kindred Sisters - meets on the fourth Saturday mornings 8:30 for breakfast, bible study and fellowship at the church. Kindred Sisters pursues various Christian book studies, Bible studies, and supports various mission projects. One of our projects is sending cards of encouragement to church members who may be going through a difficult time, as well as those in nursing homes. Any women who would like to join us are more than welcome!
Eunice Circle Meetings are announced in the weekly bulletin and monthly newsletter Eunice Circle members also put together school kits and other kits for Lutheran World Relief.
Eksjo's quilters meet on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30 pm, year round. Our quilters cut squares, sew quilt tops, tie and finish many quilts throughout the year. We also put together bundles of squares for congregation members that are unable to come to quilt night, but want to sew at home. Our finished quilts are sent to TeacHaiti and Lutheran World Relief.
One of our significant accomplishments was making 40 quilts in 2 weeks to send to Haiti, following Hurricane Ike in 2008!
We also have made quilts for fundraisers, like our bi-annual church bazaar and to raise funds for our youth group. Our quilters, working with our youth group, also make and present quilts to our graduating high school seniors, in the Spring.
"Church Basement Ladies" a Second Helping!!!!
A group of 45 women from Eksjo gathered together and attended the production of "Church Basement Ladies" A Second Helping at the Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes. We met beforehand for dessert and coffee - at Eksjo we truly believe in the "Eat Dessert First!" rule. Abby Anderson entertained us with a short presentation on the many uses of a dishtowel and showed us the different types of aprons. Then everyone was presented with an adorable apron all sewn with love by Carol Rikhus and Val Alland. Each apron made out of bright spring calicos and adorned with ric rac, yo-yo's and buttons. We were proud to say we were a part of the Eksjo group as we all wore our aprons up to the theatre. The play was very entertaining and we got lots of laughs as recognized many of their antics as things that just may have happened in our church basement a time or two.
